Art Is Essential for Life

There are people, including some Christians, who view the arts as a frivolous indulgence, especially in times of economic difficulty. If they consider that the arts have any value at all, they believe the arts to be valuable only insofar as they can be used to teach people or manipulate people or preach to people. In other words, their appreciation of the arts, if it exists at all, is strictly utilitarian.

I just came across a very good article, published in Christianity Today two days ago, which addresses the aforementioned fallacy. Incidentally, the portion of the article consisting of a quotation from Karl Paulnack is the portion from which the title of this blog post was derived.

Everyone on my Linkedin ‘FRIENDS’ list: I NEED HELP!
This Friday I am to become HOMELESS.
Despite thousands of resumes’, I don’t seem to have gotten a single offer for a job.
I have been to every single social service agency in town, who are all claiming to be stretched to their limits, and cannot be of any assistance.
I do not want to go to a homeless shelter, and then stand downtown with all my stuff, with a cup out. You don’t want this for yourselves, your parents, your kids. And yes, I am angry about it.
I have ‘donated’ plasma weekly now, for $20. A pop.
Remaining options of doing harm to others or myself, are unacceptable. I am trying to remain sane and sociably acceptable, even in these circumstances. So it has come to this. Really humbling.
I have tried re-enrolling to college. But past defaulted student loans, have dead tracked those efforts.
For those who have heard; yes, I have been diagnosed with cancer recently. Without insurance, this should become fun.
Please save the advice. If you think you know of an option, I assure you, I’ve tried it already.
I have been an artist for forty years now, at times reaching its’ highest levels. Tough field, folks. Not shamed of my career in the least.
For those of you embarrassed to receive this; GET OFF MY NETWORK OF FRIENDS. Really.
I do not have a car. Have a minute cellphone, which you may call. But a call (itself) won’t really help me will it? 216.456.4002 [and leave a detailed message].
I will gladly accept a Money Gram [details can be texted me]. A space in which to crash [Cleveland, or otherwise]. A job [if your thinking of sticking me in some cartoon costume, you can blow me].
Don’t simply ignore this and go about your day, or think it a prank. It is not, and right now your dogs and cats have it better than me.

I will send a signed piece of art to anyone who steps-up to the plate and helps out. My deepest and most sincere appreciation, as well.

And PLEASE don’t think ‘the other guy will do it’ ‘cuz you know damn well he or she won’t.
